05 Aug Race Report – Road America
Road America giveth and Road America taketh away.
That was the story for Winward Racing over the weekend, as strong qualifying and fast cars were no match for a parts failure and a late race incident.
“Russell did a great job of getting the No. 4 into the top-5,” Team Manager Alberto Pena said. “Obviously, the late race contact set us back.”
That contact took one of the fastest cars in the field and relegated it to a 16th place finish.
As for the No. 57, the left rear shock broke, which kept that car and drivers Bryce Ward and Alec Udell (filling in for Philip Ellis), from contending for a win, as well.
“Alec drove the last 1 hour and 15 minutes without left rear shock,” Pena said. “So, to finish where he did (11th) is amazing.”
The cars unloaded fast, both qualifying in the top-10.
“We had good pitstops and the cars were fast,” Pena said. “They were very well prepped.”
However, all news isn’t bad as both the No. 4 team and the No. 57 head to Virginia International Raceway (VIR) both in the top six in points.
“We have to take it race-by-race now and that’s how ae are focusing,” Pena said. “It’s a long season and we are doing our part to stay in it.
“The cars are fast, and not much should change for us. We’ve tested there and we are prepared.”
Drivers Indy Dontje and Philip Ellis will be back with the team at VIR.
The Race is August 22 and 23, and can be seen on IMSA.tv.
