24 Jul Race Report: Lime Rock 120
On Saturday, July 20, Winward Racing took the green flag for the two-hour #LimeRock120 at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut. Going to Lime Rock with the confidence of last year’s podium finish, the team looked forward to being back at the track to compete for another trophy. Throughout the two-hour event, the team also had a new-found confidence for the overall performance of the weekend.
While mechanics and engineering are important, the value of pit road success should not be understated. Throughout the 2019 season, pit stops have been successful, but a trip to Xcalibur Pit School in Mooresville, North Carolina before departing to Connecticut gave Winward Racing’s pit crew the ability to take it a step further in the team’s racing program.
“Our pit stops have been consistent all year,” Glen Wheeler, team manager, said. “However, we felt visiting XCalibur Pit School would take us to the next level.”
As a result of the trip to XCalibur Pit School, the team did rise to the next level on pit road. The No. 33 and No. 57 Mercedes-AMG GT4 teams look forward to carrying that confidence over to all future races. Winward Racing cannot thank XCalibur’s team enough for the training and guidance needed to take pit road efforts to highest level.
Unfortunately, history did not repeat itself at Lime Rock Park this weekend. The No. 57 Mercedes-AMG GT4 fell victim to a part failure halfway into the race. The No. 33 did not start due to an on-track incident during Lime Rock 120 practice.
Next up on the race schedule is the two-hour Road America 120 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin at 5:05 p.m. EST. The race will be broadcasted live on IMSA.tv and tape-delayed on NBC Sports Network on Monday, August 12 at 3:00 p.m. EST.
