22 Jul Race Report – Sebring
After six months without racing, due to Covid-19, Winward Racing returned to the track at Sebring International Speedway, taking part in the Grand Prix of Sebring.
Russell Ward and Indy Dontje brought the No. 4 Mercedes-AMG GT GT4 home fourth. The finish makes two top-4 finishes in as many races for the pair.
“I think the crew did everything we had to do, pit stops were good, but we had some contact at the beginning of the race that set us back,” Team Manager Alberto Pena said. “Russell was able to gain some positions back and it was a great team effort.”
Bryce Ward and Alec Udell, filling in for Philip Ellis, brought the No. 57 Mercedes-AMG GT GT4 home 15th.
“The weather gods weren’t on our side either, if we had another 10 minutes, I think we could have jumped up more,” Pena said. “We kept our heads down and drove through the field, and ultimately just ran out of time.”
After such a long layoff, the schedule is about to pick up. The series’ next stop is Road America on August 1 and Winward team is eager to get back on the track.
“It’s good to be back into the swing of things and get back in rhythm,” Pena said. I think Road America will be another strong track for us. The power in the Mercedes should have us there. We’re ready to hopefully finish first and second.”
Bryce Ward added a word of congratulations to a long-time sponsor.
“We would also like to congratulate our sponsors FIRST HORIZON and IBERIABANK on their recent merger,” Ward said. “We wish them continued success.”
